Webinar Title: Protectionism vs. Free Trade: Understanding the Debate Through History and Current Events

Presenter: Dr. Allen Cox, PhD, Educational Consultant, Maryland Council on Economic Education

    Date & Time: Thursday, September 18, 2025 • 7:00 PM (EST)
    Length: 45-minute presentation + 10-minute Q&A

    Description:
Trade policy is making headlines again, as tariffs, trade agreements, and global competition dominate political and economic discussions. In this timely and engaging session, Dr. Allen Cox will explore the enduring debate between protectionism and free trade—an issue with deep historical roots and significant implications for today’s economy.

Designed for high school history, government, and economics teachers, this webinar will:

    • Trace the history of US tariff policy and how it has affected consumer prices, economic growth, and trading partner relationships.
    • Explain key concepts and arguments for and against protectionist measures such as tariffs.
    • Connect current events to the broader economic and political context, giving students a richer understanding of the news.
    • Offer strategies, discussion prompts, and classroom-ready resources to help students critically evaluate trade policy.

By the end of the session, you’ll have the tools and context needed to make the topic of international trade both accessible and relevant for your students—while showing how decisions about trade affect jobs, prices, and global relationships today.
