Sponsor in Focus: Harbor Investment Advisory

Harbor Investment Advisory assists its clients to understand, define, and plan for their financial challenges and goals. That’s perfectly aligned with MCEE’s work—and a central reason why Harbor supports MCEE.

Harbor Investment Advisory was introduced to MCEE five years ago and has been a loyal financial supporter ever since. Director and Chief Financial Officer Ray Dean shared his thoughts about this important partnership.

Why does Harbor Investment Advisory choose to support MCEE?

Harbor seeks to support the community in a variety of ways. We promote a culture of giving back and volunteerism. MCEE’s work aligns perfectly with the work Harbor does assisting clients to understand, define, and plan for their financial challenges and goals. Many people are unsure how to begin identifying, defining, and planning for things like education, healthcare, insurance, and retirement costs. If we can help MCEE explain these concepts to young people, their teachers, and their families in ways they can understand and apply to their own situations, it may spur savings habits and participation in things such as 401(k), IRA, or 529 College Savings accounts.

Why is MCEE’s work so important?

The programs MCEE provides to local school systems, both in training teachers to teach financial literacy in their classrooms, as well as the engagement of young people to recognize that personal finance impacts everyone. Students can start small and let time be on their side in saving for things they aren’t even thinking about at their age, but should be. Many students may not be exposed to personal finance at home so having it be part of a curriculum in school in a fun and engaging format is very important in developing a community of adults who recognize the importance of financial literacy.

What part of MCEE’s work most impresses you?

While there are many results that emerge from the work MCEE does, we’ve found the InvestWrite essays written by 4th and 5th graders to be the most impressive. When you read about the enthusiasm they bring to The Stock Market Game, the thought process they applied when deciding which stocks to select, and the takeaways they recognize can be applied as they grow older, you forget these are 9- and 10-year-old students.
